The Baselworld Timepiece
This watch is a one of a kind design especially commissioned for the Baselworld show 2010 and features a mixture of hand engraving and diamonds.
The watch engraving is a contemporary design consisting of New Zealand Maori elements combined with traditional European scroll used to bind them together and make the design flow. The centrepiece is a large Tiki head with European scroll coming out of the mouth and transforming into a double spiral Oceania scroll head. Branching off from that there is another scroll zoomorphing into the head of a native New Zealand kiwi birds head with a long beak. Above the kiwi is the profile of Rangi and Papa, the Sky father and Earth Mother.
The Bezel engravings are stylised kowhaiwhai based on the painted designs that are commonly seen in buildings and meeting houses around New Zealand.
The winder side of the watch features a Manaia on the outside edges. This is a pattern seen in many wood carvings and is an ancient birdlike creature that some consider to be a Guardian Angel and guides the spirit through the underworld to Cape Reinga where the spirit leaves this world to join itís ancestors.
The beautiful diamonds were chosen and set into the watch by Master Stonesetter, Alexandre Sidorov from Belgium. Alexandre was given the watch and the placement of them was left to his artistic discretion. A total of 60 high quality diamonds with a combined 1.73 carats were set into the watch and the four point bezel design forms the points of the Southern Cross which features predominantly in the Pacific night sky and used by sailors for navigation.
The rotor is engraved and features another kowhaiwhai design and on the strap buckle is the old symbol of Basel which features predominantly around the city.
